Since 1917

Engines change. Craftsmanship stays.

Motorenfabriek De Sutter has been rebuilding engines since 1917. What started in Rotterdam grew into a family business where rebuilding and the parts trade have gone hand in hand for generations. By the 1950s we were already supplying engines and parts across the border.

With engineparts.eu we carry that tradition forward. We know what a rebuilder needs, because we rebuild engines ourselves. From the right piston to a matching bearing set. From modern engine parts to made-to-order work for engines whose parts have become scarce.

Why us

A parts supplier that knows engines

The brand you order is the brand you get

We buy from authorised distributors only, in the manufacturer's own packaging. No grey stock, no relabelled boxes. And because we rebuild engines ourselves, we know which part belongs in an engine code and we come back to you when something does not add up.

From the Netherlands to your door

One consolidated shipment, one invoice, one contact. Within the EU in two to four days by express carrier, worldwide by air or sea with all export paperwork handled.

Built by rebuilders

Motorenfabriek De Sutter has remanufactured engines for more than a century. When an order looks wrong, we call before we ship. That is what a parts partner should do.

One contact, the stock of many importers

We search the ranges of several large importers at the same time. You do not need five accounts and five shipping charges. Send us the engine code and we come back with what is available, wherever it sits.

Made to order

When the part no longer exists, we make it

For classic, rare and long out-of-production engines we still practise the crafts most of the trade has forgotten. Send us the original or the drawing and we take it from there.

  • Head gaskets made to pattern
  • Pistons made to sample or drawing
  • Centrifugally cast bearings, white metal

Questions from the workshop

Straight answers

What do you need from me to quote a price?

The engine code or an OE number is enough, together with the number of cylinders and the application. No engine code at hand? With the chassis number (VIN) we can usually trace it. Not sure? Send a photo of the type plate. We work out which version belongs to it and come back to you when something does not add up.

Where do I find the engine code?

Usually on the type plate or stamped into the block, often near the gearbox flange or under the intake. On a Dutch registration document the engine code is not listed, but with the chassis number we can often find it for you. Abroad the papers differ per country. If you cannot find it, send us the chassis number or a photo of the type plate and we will take it from there.

What do STD, 0.25 and 0.50 mean?

That is the size of the part compared with new. STD is standard, so unground. In millimetres 0.25 and 0.50 are undersizes for bearing shells on a reground crankshaft, and for pistons the same figures are oversizes after boring. Engines of American or British origin work in inches instead, where you see .010, .020 and .030. Sizes of 0.20 and 0.40 exist just as well as 0.25 and 0.50; which system and which sizes are available for your block follows from the engine code and comes out while we look up the parts. If you do not know the size yet, we note that and settle it once the engine has been measured.

What if a part is no longer made?

Then we make it. Head gaskets to pattern, pistons to sample or drawing, and centrifugally cast bearings in white metal. Send us the original or the drawing and we will tell you what is possible.

How quickly do you deliver?

You hear from a person within one working day. With an express shipment a part is with you in two to four days within the EU, depending on where it sits; standard freight takes longer and we agree that per order. Worldwide we ship by air or sea, with the export paperwork handled.

Can I see prices and stock myself?

Yes. With an account you get a login for PartsProfi, where you can see current prices and stock for a large part of the range, twenty four hours a day. Many industrial and truck engines are not in there yet; for those you send a request and more often than not we have a solution.

Who do you supply?

We supply the trade: engine rebuilders, garages, fleet workshops, marine and industrial engineers. One consolidated shipment, one invoice and one contact, also when the parts come from different corners of Europe.

Since 1917

A hundred and ten years of engines, written down

Cars, taxis, army trucks, marine diesels and generator sets. What follows is the long version, from the company’s own archive, for whoever wants to know how a garage in Rotterdam became an engine works.

  1. 1895

    The founder

Guilielmus Petrus de Sutter, G.P., is born in Antwerp on 7 December 1895. On his first Rotterdam registration his trade is listed as fitter.

  2. 1917

    Rotterdam

On 17 January 1917 he registers in Rotterdam, coming from Kortgene in Zeeland. From that year the business runs as Boxen-Garage De Sutter at Catharinastraat 46, where engines are rebuilt and crankshafts ground from the outset; photographs from those first years show it. 1917 is the year the company itself always kept: the company stamp reads “Motorenfabriek De Sutter, rebuilder of petrol and diesel engines, compressors, exchange engines, founded 1917”.

  3. 1928

    The limited company

On 15 May 1928 N.V. Boxengarage De Sutter is entered in the commercial register. The workshop that has been running for over ten years by then takes on a formal shape.

  4. 1929

    Whippet and Willys-Knight

An advertisement from April 1929 names the company as agent for Rotterdam and surroundings for Whippet Superior and Willys-Knight.

  5. 1930

    To Hillegersberg

In March 1930 the business moves to Willem van Hillegaersbergstraat 104. In November the Willys-Overland dealership falls away when the importer goes under.

  6. 1931

    De Sutter's Automobielbedrijf and Donnet

On 15 January 1931 the name changes to N.V. De Sutter's Automobielbedrijf. The company becomes the official Dutch importer for Donnet-Zédel.

  7. 1932

Exchange engines, taxis and a boat

Exchange parts start as a trade in 1932. Sutax runs a taxi fleet of Donnets, and in the same year the Sea-Eagle is added: “Donnet on land, Sea-Eagle on the water”. In December J. Bergwerff joins as deputy director.

  8. 1933

    On the RAI floor

Donnet stands on the RAI show floor at stand 76 in 1933 and stand 95 in 1934, with the Donnarex, Donnastar, Donnaquatre, Donnasix and Donnasuper.

  9. 1936

    Motorenfabriek Hollandia

A newspaper piece dated 11 June 1936 describes the visit to Motorenfabriek Hollandia: a Hasberg honing machine, centreless crankshaft grinding to five thousandths of a millimetre and a casting rig for 24 white metal bearings at once. In October the company advertises parking for a hundred cars, annex Motorenfabriek Hollandia, with cylinder grinding, complete engine rebuilds, pressing in liners and valve seats and casting white metal bearings. Engine rebuilding well before the war, in black and white.

  10. 1947

Work for the Royal Netherlands Navy

Letters from the Ministry of the Navy from 1947 and 1948 cover the inspection and rebuilding of Canadian Ford 15-cwt army trucks and four Diamond T crane vehicles.

  11. 1948

    Motorenfabriek De Sutter

An advertisement in the BOVAG journal of 26 August 1948, signed by the management, announces that Hollandia will carry on as Motorenfabriek De Sutter. The same advertisements speak of thirty years of experience.

  12. 1949

    NEMO

Around 1949 to 1951 the company sells the NEMO three-wheeled delivery van, built in Utrecht, with an 800 kilo payload.

  13. 1952

    Ford V8 by the batch

A receipt dated 6 February 1952 records 250 rebuilt Ford V8 engines delivered to NV Auto-Service in The Hague for 75,500 guilders. In the same year the company buys Kortenoord 63 in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.

  14. 1953

    Export

An advertisement in Machinery Lloyd of 26 September 1953 offers 600 Ford V8 engines, 85 and 100 hp, new and expertly reconditioned. Kortenoord is used for test running and for storing exchange engines.

  15. 1955

    Thirty-nine years in the trade

Export advertisements in The Surplus Register offer Jeep parts and Ford V8 engines, with “39 years trade experience”. Counted back, that lands on 1917 again.

  16. 1960

    Fire and rebuilding

A fire at the scrap merchant next door destroys a large part of the premises. What is rebuilt comes to roughly 2,400 square metres.

  17. 1967

    Kohler

On 28 March 1967 a Kohler Export Distributor's Agreement for the Netherlands is signed, followed in March 1972 by an Engine Distributor Agreement. The Kohler line runs on for decades.

  18. 1977

    Engines, compressors and marine

Letterhead from 1977, with both addresses on it, lists the company as importer of Kohler engines and generator sets, DUBA compressors, Valmet outboards and portable fire pumps, Wizeman marine diesels and BMW marine engines.

  19. 1978

    The next generation

After the death of founder G.P. de Sutter the company passes to the next generation of the family.

  20. 2012

    Zevenhuizen

The premises in Zevenhuizen are bought in 2012. In 2013 the workshop moves there and the third generation takes over the company.

  21. 2017

    A hundred years, unmarked

On New Year's Eve 2016 the man who had run the company with his wife from 1978 and handed it over in 2013 passes away. The centenary that follows is left unmarked.

  22. 2025

    PartsProfi and engineparts.eu

PartsProfi starts in 2025 as the parts channel for the workshop. With engineparts.eu the parts trade that has been here since 1932 gets its own name again, now aimed at fellow rebuilders across Europe.

  23. 2027

    110 years

In 2027 the company turns 110.
